USDA Food Pyramid, New vs Old.
Every five years USDA comes up with the new dietary guidelines for the consumers. It serves two purposes. First, it helps people make healthy food choices. Second, it supports the US food industry. Unfortunately, the second purpose often overshadows the first as business is business. Having said that, there was a positive outcome from last year’s revised food pyramid – MyPlate 2011. It is considered improved and simplified. You can see it for yourself:

The main difference between MyPyramid vs MyPlate 2011 is MyPlate is more simplified and easier to read. It is more attractive to adults and children and could be a good base for the start of discussion. However, I would personally change it: add healthy oils to it, make grains whole only, and eliminate word milk from the drink section. There is a lot of controversy going on about milk lately and this should be everyone's own decision to drink it or not. A lot of people are milk intolerant and find calcium from other sources. On the other hand, water is one of the most important elements for our survival. Sadly most of us are chronically dehydrated. Water would be my first drink choice.
