The Story of Nutritious You™ Treats

Marina Sommers, holistic health and wellness coach hasn’t always been a healthy food junkie. It all started when she and her family moved to Siesta Key, Florida. The natural beauty of the island and the beach evoke her passion for nutrition and a healthier lifestyle.

At the same time her daughter developed an acute condition of Geographic Tongue. Certain foods made it very difficult for her to eat. Several months of trying to find a cure proved to be futile. Marina realized there had to be a drastic change for the better. She finally decided to move the whole family to a strict organic whole food based diet, without gluten, white sugar, white flour, preservatives, dyes, artificial flavors or any other laboratory made food-like products.

To Marina’s amazement, her daughter’s tongue was healed in two weeks! All the spots were gone. This is where the new journey began.

Marina started creating her own treats in alignment with her family’s new diet, at the same time still wanting her daughter to have the tasty treats that kids enjoy. This is how Nutritious You™ Treats came to life.

Marina’s ultimate goal is to bring her healthy treats to as many families as possible. Forget sacrificing taste for health. She is committed to providing natural, healthy and nutrient filled foods so there is NO GUILT, while indulging on favorite flavors or textures. Marina is dedicated to creating foods that are not just better for you, but good for you.

All our treats never go to high temperatures to preserve what’s nature has created.

Neuromuscular Massage in Sarasota

When was the last time you treated yourself to a good massage?  I think the best scenario should be at least one massage per month. So when was the last one for you?

Recently I received a neuromuscular massage from a very special person in my life - Joseph Greeley. Long time ago, Joe was the guy who introduced me to the concept of food as a medicine. He used to be my neighbor. He was the guy growing bookshelves full of sprouts every day and eating them. Ever since then, I was hooked on nutrition. This is when sunflower, the first sprout I tried, became my favorite and later has become the image of my health coaching practice.  Joe completed his education in neuromuscular massage therapy and currently taking clients.  He is also studying craniosacral therapy at the moment.

This is my personal testimonial about Joseph Greeley's neuromuscular massage:
As always, it was a very thoughtful, highly customized session with Joe. I felt like a special client and learned about existence of new muscles in my body and how they work.  Even though it was relaxing and didn't hurt at all at the moment of massage, next day I felt like I had a good long exercise a day before. This is what I call an excellent service!

If you have some pain in any part of your body, need to loosen up your muscles, or if you are looking for a lot more then just a Swedish massage, I highly recommend Joe. He is offering the best deal on the market for a limited time at your location!  Please contact him at 941-223-4560.

Feel free to contact me with any questions!

Nutritious Water

Instead of buying soda, seltzer or juices, try making your own delicious water by using whatever fruits you have in the fridge. Here is a link to great ideas and instructions on how to make it: http://www.theyummylife.com/Flavored_Water. It's easy, yummy and nutritious.

My sample from this morning:

Ingredients:
1 pear
1 lemon
1 stem of mint leaves
2 handfuls of raspberry
3 drops of lavender essential oil
1 cup of ice
Filtered water to taste

First, place thinly sliced pear and lemon at the bottom of the pitcher.  Next, place the mint and ice on top followed by raspberry and lavender oil.  Then, fill up the pitcher with water and leave in the fridge for a few hours. Drink it within in the next three days.

P. S. after you drank all the water, use left over fruits in your morning smoothie!

Healthy, tasty and better for the environment.

Questions & Answers: What is Geographic Tongue?

Geographic tongue (GT) takes the form of migrating spots on the tongue that change in shape and size. It often looks as if the upper layer of tongue is missing and it stings to various degrees when exposed to certain foods.

How does a person heal geographic tongue raw patches?
A strict clean whole food based diet cured my daughter’s GT condition. However, everyone is different. If this kind of diet doesn’t help in a period of three weeks, I suggest implementing an elimination diet. This type of diet entails avoiding potential allergens for two weeks and eliminating all potentially allergenic foods: dairy, wheat, gluten, eggs, soy, citrus, strawberries, and chocolate. After two weeks, you re-introduce these items individually to learn which food gives you a reaction or discomfort.

What is a clean whole food based diet?
It is the diet of our ancestors that our immune system is built to understand. It has abundance of plant-based products and it excludes the food created in a lab. The whole food based diet comes from the garden and free-range happy pastures. It does not include packaged foods.

How long does it take for geographic tongue to heal?
In our case, it took two weeks for it to heal, but there was a recurrence of symptoms when we strayed from a healthy diet.

Do I have to follow this diet for the rest of my life?
If you look at your body as an extremely smart bio-computer that consists of 100 trillion cells, then you understand those cells need special “oil” (i.e.- special foods to operate well). The heart has to beat, the brain has to think, the liver has to detox 24/7, the eyes have to see for you to productively function. Once you start looking at your body as an expensive Ferrari you won’t fuel it with cheap gas. Choose whole foods abundant in vitamins and minerals, phytonutrients and anti-oxidants that will create new cells and fix your old ones. Remember, you want the highest grade gas you can put in your tank.

What doctor to go to, who can help me with GT condition?
In my experience, few of the classic medical doctors will be able to help you. GT is believed to be a benign condition and many feel it is a chronic issue to be endured.

Nutritious Activity for Kids, Two

Nutritious Activity for Kids, Two

Wouldn’t it be a great idea if your pre-school teacher or school encouraged a Healthy Lunch Day in a class? The kids can call it “Show & Share Lunch”. They could bring different healthy items to eat once a week and the homework would be for the parents to explain why is each item good for their child. Bring anything you think is healthy, no judgment, and receive a collection of opinions. For instance, Jenny has carrots today, Jenny says carrots are good for eyes, so her eyes can wink whenever Jenny wants and they can see far away into horizon. When kids learn the actual importance of each item it becomes more meaningful and tastes better.

So far, we have a pizza day in our school on Friday. I think the Healthy Lunch Day is in dire need!

Unfortunately, most of the children’s books I’ve seen so far send a clear message that foods like pizza, cookies, or ice cream are the best treat ever and should be highly desired! I was lucky to find one book in a library that was all about veggies and fruits and I grabbed it!. The saddest part is that kids are the sponges that take in any encouragement SO EASILY and we use it to send the wrong messages! I realized it from my own experiment with my first child, when my toddler was just getting exposed to the world around her. When there was someone in the book excited to eat pizza, then she thought it was wonderful to eat pizza, especially if she clearly got that message outside of the family all the time. On the other hand, when I told her a story about a happy lettuce that got on a boy’s plate and how the boy enjoyed it, my toddler would respond with enthusiasm thinking it’s so great to eat lettuce. It was especially clear how easy a child gets a message when we went to the zoo and fed giraffes with the lettuce – the reinforcement outside of the house – she called herself giraffe for several months and ate the plain lettuce with pleasure. It's not easy to stay consistent especially when you are trying to build in the habits that are not mainstream but it is possible. As parents, we can model a certain behavior at home, and as long as we are consistent and show our confidence we can expect the child to follow.

If you can recommend a good children’s book that supports green living, love for greens, veggies, and fruits please share it with us readers in the comment section!

Eat More Carbs!

The Importance of Carbohydrates

If you prefer a low carb or no carb diet, you need to read this!

Carbohydrates are one of the macronutrients we humans need for survival, calories, and energy. Carbs are the most present macronutrient in nature and we need it in the largest amounts.

No-mater what kind of carb you eat, our highly intelligent organism will convert it into glucose, the simplest form of sugar. After our meal, blood absorbs glucose and delivers it to our cells. Our cells will use it immediately for energy or store it for future use. Did you ever wonder why when you work really hard on some project, you crave chocolate or other sweets? The answer is carbs or a glucose form of it. It is the only single source of energy for human brain. Carbs are also needed for nervous system, kidneys, muscles, heart, etc. We can turn fat and protein into energy but the number one source of energy is still carbs. Of course, you need to minimize amounts of refined sugar, white bread, or pizza as those are a simple form of carbs that create quick spike and sudden crash, you don't want these empty calories. Find your best source of energy in complex carbohydrates- vegetables, legumes, grains, nuts, seeds, and fruits.

Eat LESS of these carbs:

And eat MORE of these carbs:

Baked Apples Easy Recipe

I had to have something sweet this afternoon and since it had to be a healthy version this is what I made. Don't we all just love easy recipes??

Baked Apples:
Wash your organic large apples, make a cone shaped whole in each apple to get rid of the seeds and to have an opening. Fill the opening with raisins and 1/2 tsp raw agave nectar or honey. Sprinkle generously with cinnamon - powerful antioxidant. Stock all the apples on the tray with 1/4 inch of water and into the 350 preheated oven for 25 minutes or until they are soft. Enjoy!

We Need Strict Gun Laws!

I am getting off the nutrition subject again. But it is a wellness matter, a major part of the nutritious well-being or primary foods. After the Newtown, CT shooting I am having a hard time focusing on nourishing our bodies when there is such a whole in my soul, in our society. If that town wasn't safe enough for poor little angels, then the safe place does not exists in the world.

Kudos to Obama and Bloomberg for voicing this matter: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/20/us/politics/obama-to-give-congress-plan-on-gun-control-within-weeks.html?smid=fb-share

Growing up in the country with much striker gun laws I felt much safer as a child, there was no such thing as "gun collection" or "death" in my vocabulary. Violent video games did not exist. Our schools had never been gated!

If someone is interested in collecting guns (what an absurd!), it is a clear message that there is something wrong with that person. If you agree with it, then write a letter to your Senator and Representative. If you don't know how to, get a template from my previous post. If you have any questions don't hesitate to contact me.

Do something!
